Captain Munnerlyn signs with Buffalo Bills, reuniting with former coordinator

Former South Carolina DB Captain Munnerlyn wasn’t on an NFL roster when teams opened training camp, but the veteran defender has found a home. The Buffalo Bills have signed Munnerlyn, reuniting him with a familiar coach.
Sean McDermott, who was Carolina’s for three of Munnerlyn’s seasons with the Panthers (2011-13) is excited to be coaching the former Gamecock again.
“It’s been a few years now since the last time we worked together,” McDermott said during his Sunday press conference (below), “but what I remember was the competitiveness, the toughness. He obviously played in this system before, so he has some familiarity with our system both inside the slot and out at corner, so we’ll see how he does and how he progresses here. He’s been out of it for a little bit, so he’s got to play himself back into shape.”
Munnerlyn was released by Carolina in February, bringing a premature end to his second go-around with the Panthers after signing a four-year deal ahead of the 2017 season.
“It doesn’t always happen for it to come full circle where we can work together again,” McDermott said of reuniting with former players. “It’s satisfying.”
McDermott has been Buffalo’s head coach since 2017. Munnerlyn’s play still stood out to him from afar.
“The thing that jumped out even when I watched him play on TV last year maybe was the competitiveness,” McDermott said, “so all that hasn’t changed. I think that’s in his DNA.”
