Troy and Appalachian State met in the Sun Belt championship game on Saturday.
Late in the 3rd quarter with his team down 21-17, Troy head coach Jon Sumrall was enraged by a non-call by the officiating crew, feeling that a Mountaineers defender should have been called for a facemask penalty. He had to be restrained by an assistant while screaming at the officials.

Sumrall felt a lot better after the game ended, though. The Trojans turned a 21-17 lead into a blowout behind 28 4th-quarter points, winning 49-23 to claim a 2nd-straight SBC title and moving to 11-2 on the season. After defeating FCS Stephen F. Austin and dropping 2 straight to Kansas State and James Madison, they’ve won 10 in a row.
Meanwhile, Sumrall — a former Kentucky linebacker who was inside linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator at his alma mater prior to his arrival at Troy — has worked wonders with the Trojan program since his arrival, moving to 23-4 in 2 seasons at the helm. His predecessor, Chip Lindsay, was 15-19 in 3 seasons.
