Columnist: Judging by elite recruits, 5 SEC teams have shot at national title

Many will argue the single greatest indicator of success in college football is talent on the roster.
Judging by that metric, one article claims that only five SEC schools (13 in total from across the nation) have a chance to win the national title in 2016 – based upon their number of four- and five-star players signed being greater than the number of two- and three-star prospects signed during the last four years.
According to Bud Elliott of SBNation, the five SEC teams with a legitimate shot to take home the national title this season are: Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Auburn and Texas A&M.
Elliott’s rankings suggest Tennessee, Florida and Ole Miss are the three teams just outside the 13 teams listed as capable of winning it all. Interestingly enough, Texas is ranked among the 13.
While the SEC has only five teams listed as contenders according this metric, no other conference has more than two teams. Despite recent comments made by ESPN’s Travis Haney suggesting Tennessee’s roster is on par with both Alabama and LSU, this metric contends the Vols would not be able to compete with either school should the Vols advance to Atlanta in December.
