Only minutes after Miami announced that Jarren Williams would start the season as the starting quarterback following a three-man competition, Florida coach Dan Mullen was asked how that plays into the Gators’ preparation.

Williams beat out Ohio State transfer Tate Martell and N’Kosi Perry.

“We’ll look at him, he hasn’t played a whole lot, none of their guys have really played a whole lot,” Mullen said. “It’s not like ‘OK, let’s go study this guy.’ And it’s a new coaching staff, so you don’t have a whole lot of film to go on. In early games, Game 1, a lot of the focus has to be on you. If you play well, you put yourself in a position to win. More than relying on, ‘Hey, we’re just doing to out-scheme them in some way, shape, or form, because it’s Game 1. You don’t have a lot on their team. We have new players, they have new players. They have a new coaching staff, which is a little bit different.”

Mullen added that his staff recruited Williams at Mississippi State, but he appeared to not put much stock in that since it was a couple years ago.

The Gators and the Hurricanes will kick off on Aug. 24 in Orlando.
