Just before Derrick Brown begins his rookie season in the NFL, the former Auburn standout was recognized for his outstanding final season with the Tigers. On Sunday, the Alabama Sports Writers Association named Brown the state’s Amateur Athlete of the Year.
“It’s an honor and privilege to be able to receive this amazing recognition, especially knowing the number of phenomenal athletes who have played in this state,” Brown said in a statement through the school, per the Opelika-Auburn News. “It’s special to see my work at Auburn come full circle, and of course, I am thankful to my teammates and coaches and to the Auburn family, whose support has been terrific.”
It’s just the latest (and presumably final) award for Brown’s stellar senior season. Brown had a dominating presence on Auburn’s stout defensive line, recording 55 tackles, including 12.5 for loss, 4 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. He received numerous accolades, including SEC Defensive Player of the Year, consensus first-team All-American and the Lott IMPACT Trophy.
Brown was picked No. 7 overall by the Charlotte Panthers in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
