Kevin Sumlin will be back under the big headset after a year away from coaching, as the USFL’s Houston Gamblers announced Wednesday that Sumlin will return to be their head coach.
Sumlin, who excelled at Texas A&M from 2012-17 and also had collegiate head coaching stints at Houston (2008-11) and Arizona (2018-20), was fired by the Gamblers in 2022 after a disappointing 3-7 season in 2022.
Following his departure from the Gamblers, Sumlin latched on at Maryland to serve as the Terrapins’ associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator, and tight ends coach. Sumlin spent 2 seasons in College Park but was fired at the end of the 2024 season after an off-field incident that included a DUI charge.
Sumlin coached Houston to a 35-17 record that included a 12-1 season in 2011 – propelling him to the position at Texas A&M. While with the Aggies, Sumlin helped coach quarterback Johnny Manziel to the 2012 Heisman Trophy and the team to a 11-2 record. Despite never turning in a losing season in College Station, Texas A&M fired Sumlin after a 7-5 campaign in 2017.
Sumlin’s Arizona teams never gelled, with the Wildcats going 5-7 in 2018, 4-8 in 2019, and 0-5 to start 2020 – including a 70-7 loss to in-state rival Arizona State – before his ouster.
