Former Texas receiver Johntay Cook lands with new ACC team, per report
Former Texas wide receiver Johntay Cook has signed with Syracuse, according to multiple reports.
Cook is looking to revive a once-promising career with coach Fran Brown, who breathed new life into the Orange program last year in his first season at the helm. Cook was a 5-star recruit when he came out of high school in the 2023 class.
On3’s Hayes Fawcett was the first to report on the transfer.
He spent 2 seasons with Texas, but left the team midway through the 2024 season with an intent to transfer. During the winter window, Cook committed to Washington. Less than a month later, Cook left UW.
According to a report from CuseNation’s Michael McAllister, Cook will join Syracuse later this summer. He’ll have 2 years of eligibility remaining.
A native of DeSoto, Texas, Cook played in 14 games as a true freshman in 2023, but he only made 8 receptions for 136 yards during the campaign. He played in 6 games during the 2024 season before leaving the team. In those 6 games, he caught 8 balls for 137 yards and 2 scores.
At 6-feet and 186 pounds, Cook showed quick feet and strong feel as a route-runner when he was in high school. He was a track and field athlete for DeSoto and caught close to 50 touchdowns in 3 varsity football seasons.
The potential is there. If Brown can keep Cook straight, Syracuse will benefit.
Cook becomes the 15th transfer commitment for Syracuse this offseason. The Orange snagged former Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli out of the portal, remade the offensive line, and signed former South Carolina wideout Tyshawn Russell.
Syracuse is coming off a 10-3 season last fall. The Orange saw 3 pass-catchers clear 900 yards receiving last season, and all 3 of them need to be replaced.
