The more things change, the more they stay the same for the Texas Longhorns. Last season, they had some elite wins and a puzzling loss on their College Football Playoff resume. This year, they’ve decided to run things back.
Ahead of Halloween, the Longhorns have three tremendous victories and two questionable defeats. With so much still in flux, Texas’ resume currently shapes as the best two-loss playoff resume in the sport, according to Greg McElroy.

“They beat [No. 1] Ohio State… beat No. 14 Tennessee… [then] knock off No. 7 Ole Miss. That’s three wins over teams that were ranked in the top 14 at kickoff,” McElroy said on his Always College Football podcast. “They have zero losses in those ranked games. The two losses came, ironically, came to two unranked teams… you lost some wiggle room. But guess what? You’re still in a pretty good place.”
The success of currently No. 17 Florida could be a huge factor in whether or not the Longhorns reach the CFP. The Gators were unranked when they went to Austin and beat Texas 27-24. If Jon Sumrall’s team falls out of the top 25, the stain from the Longhorns’ loss to them would resemble that of their meltdown against the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas hosts Mississippi State in Week 9.
