Gus Malzahn went a respectable 3-5 against Alabama as the head coach at Auburn. Saturday’s triumph doesn’t go on his ledger, but he’s reveling in it all the same.

Shortly after the Florida State Seminoles defeated the Crimson Tide 31-17, Malzahn — FSU’s offensive coordinator — took to Twitter/X to celebrate. Apparently this season-opening win has him feeling like it’s 2013, 2017 and 2019 all at once.

Malzahn’s offense took fire to Alabama’s rushing defense on Saturday. Excluding kneel downs, the Seminoles posted 46 carries for 236 yards (5.1 YPC) and four rushing scores versus the Crimson Tide.

Quarterback Thomas Castellanos — who was responsible for 78 of those yards — didn’t throw many passes in the game, but was effective when he did. The Boston College transfer completed 9-of-14 passes (64.3%) for 152 yards. His 10.9 yards per pass attempt set a new career-high against FBS competition.

Florida State’s victory ended a 23-game winning streak for Alabama in season-openers. The ‘Noles now get to host Texas A&M-Commerce (Sept. 6) and Kent State (Sept. 20) to gear up for ACC play. Their first conference matchup comes at Virginia on Friday, Sept. 26. Kickoff against the Cavaliers is set for 7:00 p.m. E.T.
