The Kentucky Wildcats landed one of the top point guards in the nation on Monday, as former Georgia star Sahvir Wheeler committed to coach John Calipari’s program.

Wheeler has been a key part of Georgia’s offense in recent years, developing into the top assist man in the SEC.

After Wheeler’s commitment, Calipari explained why it is a huge deal for the Wildcats in 2021-22 (via Rivals.com):

“Sahvir is the kind of player that dictates the pace of the game, who gets easy baskets for himself and his teammates, and who can be disruptive defensively,” Calipari said. “He is what you look for in a point guard in that he puts his teammates in positions to score, yet he can score the ball in bunches when he needs to.

“He was a second-team all-conference player as a sophomore and almost routinely put up games with double-digit assists, including setting the SEC Tournament record this last season with 13. I am excited for him to be a part of this program and my guess is our players will be too.”

Wheeler appeared in 26 games for Georgia last season, starting all of them. He averaged 14.0 points, 7.4 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. Will he find success in Lexington? We’ll find out this coming season.
