Jon Sumrall does not like being interrupted by ringing cell phones.
The new Florida Gators head coach’s time at the podium was put on pause after a reporter or photographer’s cell phone rang during a question regarding Lane Kiffin. Sumrall stopped short of making the reporter name themselves but still had a few choice words for the owner.
“You would be kicked out of our team meeting. I swear,” Sumrall said. “You’re lucky I’m not gonna throw this freaking podium right now. That drives me crazy.”
While he certainly seemed annoyed by the interruption, Sumrall appears to be at least half-heartedly joking and the audience of reporters gave it a laugh. However you choose to view it, it’s obvious Sumrall is certainly bringing a new vibe to Gainesville.
As you can tell, he’s more outspoken that former Florida coach Billy Napier. Earlier on Wednesday, Sumrall noted with brutal honest that Florida in its current form “will get our ass beat” without improvement, but he also noted several times how much he’s grateful for the opportunity to coach the Gators.
Florida certainly needed a change. We’ll get our first look at Sumrall’s Gators when the season kicks off on September 5.
