Josh Heupel shares update on DeSean Bishop ahead of Tennessee’s showdown with top-ranked Texas

The No. 14-ranked Tennessee Volunteers are getting ready to take on what is likely to be their toughest test of the entire season this Saturday when they welcome the top-ranked Texas Longhorns to Rocky Top for a high-noon kickoff in Neyland Stadium.
This will be the first time in almost 60 years that these 2 programs will meet on the gridiron, and the first time ever that the Longhorns make the trip to Knoxville.
Adding to the intrigue of this heavyweight SEC bout is the injury status of star Tennessee running back DeSean Bishop, who left the Vols Week 3 blowout win against Kennesaw State early with a hip injury. Head coach Josh Heupel was asked about Bishop’s status heading into Saturday’s showdown against Texas and told reporters that the staff going to make sure the star tailback is “fully ready” come game time.

A Knoxville native, Bishop became one of the SEC’s top backs last season, posting 1,076 yards and 16 touchdowns in a junior campaign that earned him second-team All-SEC honors.
He’s carried over his success from 2025 into the new campaign, currently leading all Tennessee ball carriers with 286 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 46 touches.
Bishop is arguably the most important piece of the Volunteers’ offense, and having him at 100% this Saturday is imperative if Tennessee wants a realistic shot at upsetting the No. 1 team in the country.
