SEC defenses have been struggling to start the 2020 season, and it’s been well publicized.
Most notably, Alabama, Florida, LSU and Ole Miss have been getting gashed by offenses. Lots of crooked numbers are going up on scoreboards and stat lines for teams that have historically strong defense.
But not this year.
Missing spring practice hurt a ton, as teams work on fundamentals during the spring, and it shows.
SEC defense, or lack thereof, was discussed heavily on College GameDay Saturday morning, and Kirk Herbstreit railed the conference for it.
“I think it’s really a perfect storm … but I’ve never seen less buy-in than I have from watching games this year,” Herbsteit said. “Some of the guys opted out. Well, some of the guys who opted in, mentally opted out. Watching it, it’s not about ‘x’s and ‘o’s. It’s about just not being committed. When you play defense — David Pollack can tell you — it’s about 11 guys having each other’s back. Eleven guys pulling for the same cause. I’m not seeing that.”
He’s right, and the truth hurts sometimes. Defenses are going through the motions and defenders are missing many tackles in every game.
