Lane Kiffin fed information to Dabo Swinney, encouraged tampering allegations against Ole Miss, per SEC insider

One of the wildest college football stories of 2026 came early when Dabo Swinney lobbed tampering allegations at Ole Miss in January. One SEC insider shared Wednesday that Lane Kiffin played a role in getting the Clemson coach to speak out.
On Jan. 23, Swinney memorably blasted Ole Miss for signing Luke Ferrelli. A Cal transfer, Ferrelli initially enrolled at Clemson. He ultimately ended up at Ole Miss. Swinney alleged that Pete Golding and his staff continued to contact Ferrelli while he was enrolled at Clemson. While Golding declined to address the exact timeline of events with Ferrelli signing with two schools, the Ole Miss coach noted that the Rebels had been in contact with Ferrelli prior to his Clemson signing and that Ferrelli had taken an official visit to Ole Miss prior to the Fiesta Bowl.
On Wednesday, John Talty of CBS Sports revealed Kiffin’s involvement in the Ole Miss-Clemson controversy. Sharing an excerpt from his upcoming book, “Lane Being Lane: The Story of Lane Kiffin, College Football’s Agent of Chaos,” Talty revealed that sources said Kiffin fed information to Swinney and “egged Swinney on” in calling out Ole Miss for alleged tampering.
Per Talty’s sources, Clemson assistant coach Matt Luke felt the need to let Ole Miss know what was going on. Luke played for the Rebels from 1995-98, had multiple stints as an assistant (2002-05, 2012-16) and was the program’s head coach from 2017-19.
Kiffin even passed along information, according to multiple sources, to help Swinney in his crusade against Golding and Ole Miss. Clemson offensive line coach Matt Luke, the former Ole Miss head coach, called his alma mater to give it a heads-up on what Kiffin had helped convince Swinney to do.
Talty writes that Clemson downplayed Kiffin’s involvement, saying all information provided to the NCAA on alleged tampering came from firsthand sources and that there was no external motivation to go public with said allegations. Talty notes that Swinney indicated he hasn’t heard anything from the NCAA, and that his focus is on gearing up for the Week 1 game against Kiffin’s LSU Tigers.
“Lane Being Lane” is set for release on Sept. 15, days before Kiffin’s highly anticipated return to Oxford for LSU vs. Ole Miss.
