During Saturday’s “College GameDay” from Athens, ESPN’s Lee Corso said that Auburn is the one program that does not let him sport the headgear.
โLast week, Auburn looked good in beating No. 23 Kentucky,โ Corso said during the pregame show. โGeorgia had to rally to beat Arkansas, a team that lost 23 straight games. So Auburn has the edge. Since Auburn is the only school that wonโt let me wear their mascot head, I got no other choice, go beautiful Dawgs.โ
Corso’s GameDay colleague Kirk Herbstreit asked him about the Aubie headgear ban in a video posted on Twitter. Corso told Herbstreit he didn’t know why he isn’t allowed.
โI never pick them anymore. Theyโre done,” he offered.
This week on storytime with LC, he tells us why he has never worn the Auburn mascot headgear for @CollegeGameDay and we talk about this week’s games-BIG week!! We’re gonna dive into all of it now on ESPN! pic.twitter.com/ZNIUmHPZbv

Mark Helm of AL.com, however, notes that an explanation was offered back in 2015:
โAuburn is the only school in America that will not let me put on the headgear,โ Corso said, per an AL.com report. โThey have some kind of rule that you have got to be a special kind of human being to wear this guyโs headgear.โ
… ESPN College GameDay producer Lee Fitting explained why Auburn doesnโt allow the gear to be worn on the broadcast.
โItโs like the War Eagle Club tradition that no one puts on the mascot, except for the kid whoโs the mascot,โ Fitting told AL.com in 2015. โItโs one of those things we respect and find other means – don the old-school leather football helmet and move on.โ
We’ll see if Aubie headgear ban puts Corso in any more awkward situations this season.
