Mississippi State coach Mike Leach hasn’t officially named his Week 1 starting quarterback, but there’s a strong indication which Bulldog QB will take the first snap.

In a post-scrimmage press conference, Leach was asked if he’s closer to settling on Mississippi State’s starting quarterback.

“If we were to play today, KJ (Costello) would be the starter, though I think Will (Rogers) is doing some really good things,” Leach said. “Just had a good scrimmage, I think they both looked pretty good. It was a good scrimmage from the standpoint that both sides have some things to be happy about, both sides got plenty to be pissed about. But we’ve revealed more work, more stuff to sharpen up on, but I thought it was a competitive scrimmage. I was encouraged by it.”

Costello, a transfer from Stanford, was long expected to take over the starting job. With Garrett Shrader now working at wide receiver, it’s down to Costello and Will Rogers, a 2018 MSU signee from Brandon, Mississippi.

It sure looks like Costello will be leading the Bulldog Air Raid when Leach’s squad travels to LSU on Sept.26 to open the 2020 season. The game is set for a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff on CBS.
