Nick Saban is reportedly preparing to retire from his post as Alabama’s head coach.

That’s per a stunning Wednesday evening report from ESPN’s Chris Low. According to Low, Saban has informed Alabama’s players that he is indeed retiring following the 2023 season.

Saban is already one of the greatest head coaches of all time and was among the oldest coaches in the country in recent seasons. He has been at Alabama since 2007 but has not won a national title since 2020.

Since joining the Crimson Tide in 2007, Saban has delivered 6 national titles and 9 SEC championships. He also captured a national title while at LSU during the 2003 season.

Overall, Saban has gone 206-29 at Alabama and is second on the program’s all-time wins list to Bear Bryant. However, Saban’s .877 winning percentage is tops in Crimson Tide history.

At this stage of his career, questions of whether or not Saban would retire from coaching were an annual conversation. He is 72 years old and has been in coaching since the early 1970s with various stints across the NFL and college football.

Saban’s legacy has already been cemented as one of the all-time great coaches at any level of the sport, and his departure will lead to a major offseason of change at Alabama heading into the expanded 12-team Playoff in 2024.
