Jalen Hurts and Nick Saban won a national championship together at Alabama. Hurts may not have thrown the game-winning touchdown pass to clinch that victory, but was Saban’s starting quarterback the entire season. They still hold a good relationship, which made the latest news surrounding Hurts hard for Saban to swallow.

On Monday, Saban revealed he had sent well wishes to Hurts following news of the Super Bowl LIX MVP’s blood clots.

“I texted him… he sent Miss Terry the prettiest flowers when we had our documentary [debut],” Saban said. “He’s such a first-class guy… our thoughts and prayers are with him for a speedy recovery.”

Hurts played against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5 despite having been diagnosed with a blood clot in his calf following the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He reportedly did not sleep for 36 hours prior to kickoff for precautionary reasons after learning of the clot. Hurts was placed on injured reserve on Monday morning after further examination revealed he now had blood clots in his lungs.

Philadelphia (2-4) will roll forward with Tanner McKee at quarterback in Hurts’ absence. The Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football in Week 7.
