Dan Mullen is no longer the head coach at Florida. Greg Knox is serving as the interim head coach. But who will be hired to lead the Gators into the future?
Thatโs what Florida will be trying to decide soon, as it will look to hire a head coach that can lead it back to success. The Gators have been a successful program, so their 2-6 record in SEC play this season was not up to their typical standards.
When could Florida decide on a new head coach? Athletic director Scott Stricklin said during his Sunday press conference that thereโs currently โno timetable.โ
โWe want to take the time we need to get the right coach,โ Stricklin told the media. โWeโd love to have one tomorrow, but thatโs probably not realistic. But weโre going to move as quickly as we can, weโre going to use every available resource at our disposal, whether itโs contacts or anything else, to get as much information to make the right decision.
โIt goes back to this is a place that we want to win championships. Weโve won 251 SEC championships in our history as a university, thatโs 100 more, nearly, than the next closest SEC school. Weโve won 42 national championships across all sports, 3 in the sport of football. We want someone that has high expectations and big aspirations that match the University of Florida.โ
This will be Floridaโs first search for a head coach since 2017. Jim McElwain and the Gators parted ways in October 2017, then Mullen was hired the next month.
In the meantime, Knox will lead Florida into its regular-season finale against Florida State on Saturday. The Gators will need a win to become bowl eligible.
