The upcoming game between No. 11 South Carolina and Vanderbilt at Williams-Brice Stadium marks an important event as it’s the SEC opener for both the Gamecocks and Commodores.
The Gamecocks have named junior tight end Maurice Brown II, redshirt junior offensive lineman Cason Henry, redshirt sophomore quarterback LaNorris Sellers, and senior defensive back DQ Smith as team captains for this significant matchup.
With the Commodores looking to threaten the Gamecocks and seek revenge after losing 28-7 last year at their home stadium, these players are expected to lead their team and set the tone for their teammates as they kick off SEC play. The selection of captains highlight their leadership qualities, which are crucial for guiding the team in a competitive conference game.
South Carolina is just a 3.5-point favorite in the matchup, per ESPN Bet. That’s down from the opening line of South Carolina -5.5. ESPN’s Football Power Index gives the Gamecocks a 65.1% chance to win the game.
Shane Beamer and Co. are coming off a 38-10 win over South Carolina State in Week 2. The Gamecocks defeated Virginia Tech 24-11 on a neutral site to open the season.
Vanderbilt beat that same Virginia Tech team in Blacksburg a week ago, outscoring the Hokies 34-0 in the second half to win 44-20.
Kickoff between the ‘Dores and the Gamecocks is set for 7:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
