Fans will always know Steve Spurrier as “the Head Ball Coach,” but for the past couple years, he has been the Head Ambassador of the UF athletic department. As of this weekend, he’s officially a football coach again.

The Orlando Apollos, Spurrier’s Alliance of American Football squad, held its first practice Saturday. It was Spurrier’s first time coaching since stepping down at South Carolina during the 2015 season.

โ€œJust coaching again was a lot of fun,โ€ Spurrier said after the teamโ€™s first practice, according to the Orlando Sentinel. โ€œWeโ€™ve had about three days to meet and theyโ€™ve absorbed everything weโ€™re trying to teach.โ€

The HBC is clearly excited about his new team of former college football players not on NFL rosters.

โ€œThat might have been the best first practice that Iโ€™ve ever had as a head coach,โ€ Spurrier said. โ€œIf we had to play a game tomorrow, we could play.โ€

The Apollos will play their first game of the season Feb. 9, 2019 against the Atlanta Legends.
