Texas looks set to be without a pair of stars — one on either side of the ball — when it faces Ole Miss on Saturday.

The already-reeling Longhorns, who lost to Oklahoma and Florida in back-to-back weeks, listed running back Hollywood Smothers as questionable and edge rusher Colin Simmons as doubtful in the initial SEC availability report released Wednesday. Thursday’s updated report, though, downgraded Simmons to out and Smothers to questionable.

We could have some insight into Smothers’ injury. According to On3’s Pete Nakos, the redshirt junior “is working through an upper-body injury.” Back on Tuesday, 247Sports’ Eric Henry reported that Smothers was “wearing a protective sling” while being held out of practice.

Simmons, meanwhile, could be out for a while after needing help to get off the field during Week 7’s loss to Florida. It turned out to be an ankle sprain, one that will reportedly sideline him for three to four weeks.

Texas‘s margin for error is razor-thin if it wants to return to the College Football Playoff. After Saturday’s game against Ole Miss, it hosts Mississippi State before travelling to Mizzou. The Longhorns then face LSU on the road, Arkansas at home, and Texas A&M on the road to wrap up the regular season.
