The LSU Tigers made headlines over the weekend with the firing of head coach Brian Kelly, and one of the more interesting things about the whole situation was the reported involvement of the state’s governor, Jeff Landry.

Given the lack of a current full-time president at the university, Landry reportedly stepped in and rallied support among the power brokers down in Baton Rouge in order to get Kelly out the door.

This unusual situation naturally drew a wide range of reactions from people in and around the sport, and this includes a man who has been linked to the opening with the Tigers in former OSU and Florida head coach Urban Meyer, who said that the governor’s reported involvement in Kelly’s firing would “change the game.”

“If this really took place in the Governor’s mansion, and if the Governor and other non-football people were making the decision, as a coach, that’s an alarm,” Meyer said on a recent episode of The Triple Option. “… I hate to speculate, but, to me, if that did happen, then that changes the game. If you’re now going to interview for the head coaching position at LSU, do you meet with the Governor?”

Interestingly, Meyer’s comments come as FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt said the three-time national champion should be one of LSU’s first calls.
