The No. 10 Utah Utes are playing host to College GameDay for the first time this season in Week 8, after a 6-0 start has placed them firmly in the Big 12 and College Football Playoff championship hunts.
This resurgence in Utah football has been led by first-year head coach Morgan Scalley, who took the reins after his longtime boss and mentor Kyle Whittingham took the head gig at Michigan last offseason.
Scalley joined the GameDay crew Saturday morning to discuss his program and coaching philosophy, and he recounted a story in which former Alabama head coach and current GameDay host Nick Saban left him feeling humbled after a brief discussion about cover 3 defenses.
“I always appreciated my time with you (pointing at Saban), you humbled me very quickly in a discussion about cover 3,” Scalley said. “I went back from that saying ‘Holy cow, I don’t know football.'”
If one person can make any high-level coach feel inadequate about their football knowledge, it’s the former Crimson Tide head coach, and Scalley is almost certainly not the only person left dumbfounded after talking shop with Saban.
The fact that so many great football minds still speak so highly of the 7-time national champion is just another feather in his cap, and further testament to his greatness.
