Al Michaels, one of the greatest play-by-play announcers of all time, will not call NBC’s coverage of the 2024 NFL playoffs this year, according to a report from the New York Post.

NBC removed Michaels in a move “he wasn’t expecting,” according to the original report. Michaels, who is 79, currently calls Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime alongside Kirk Herbstreit.

NBC will air 4 NFL playoff games starting in January. Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth will call 3 of those games, with Noah Eagle and Todd Blackledge handling the other assignment.

Michaels’ run is legendary. He has called 11 Super Bowls all-time and has done work with both ABC and NBC, as well as Amazon this past season as previously mentioned. In early November, according to The Post, Michaels believed he would be working a playoff game for NBC this season.

“It’s in my deal,” Michaels told the New York Post when told a swap-out was possible. “Where are you hearing that from? That’s part of my deal. Are you hearing something that I’m not hearing?”

The NFL playoff will begin on January 13.
