Baker Mayfield to miss multiple games, per Bucs coach Todd Bowles
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell to 0-3 after losing 23-16 to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon. This, obviously, is not an ideal start to a football season. To make matters worse, the Bucs will now be without their starting quarterback for a few weeks.
According to head coach Todd Bowles, Baker Mayfield will miss three games due to a dislocated thumb. Mayfield suffered the injury on Tampa Bay’s penultimate offensive drive in Week 3.
Mayfield completed just 50% of his passes (17/34) for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Vikings. On the season, the former Oklahoma star has produced 615 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Tampa Bay’s offense has averaged just 20.7 points per game through three contests this year.
Undrafted rookie signal-caller Jalon Daniels will start for the Buccaneers in Mayfield’s stead. The former Kansas Jayhawk beat out Jake Browning and Connor Bazelak to earn Tampa’s QB2 job this offseason. Across six years at Kansas, Daniels completed 61.5% of his passes for 9,282 yards, 67 touchdowns and 31 interceptions.
Assuming Mayfield’s timeline is accurate, Daniels will face the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers. The Buccaneers and Packers kick off at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday in Week 4 (FOX).
