JJ McCarthy’s time with the Vikings has come to an end.
The former Michigan quarterback has been traded to the New York Giants, according to a report. McCarthy will presumably be in line to start for New York after the franchise lost Jaxson Dart to a season-ending knee injury last week.
The news of the trade was first shared by FOX’s Jay Glazer, who notes that Minnesota will receive a 5th-round pick as compensation:

McCarthy is a former first-round pick, but has struggled to find his footing in the NFL. After missing his rookie season due to injury, McCarthy started 10 games for the Vikings a season ago but had more interceptions (12) than touchdown passes (11).
McCarthy entered the 2026 season as Minnesota’s third-string quarterback behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz.
In college, McCarthy led Michigan to the National Championship in 2023 and was picked No. 10 overall by the Vikings in the 2024 NFL Draft.
McCarthy will now join a Giants QB room that includes Jameis Winston. New York will face the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. He’ll also be playing for John Harbaugh — the brother of Jim Harbaugh, who coached McCarthy during his college career.
