Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has accomplished many things in his NFL career. In Week 3 against the Denver Broncos, the former Georgia quarterback became the first player in NFL history to reach 20,000 passing yards with two franchises. Unfortunately, he also made league history in a different way during the Sunday Night Football matchup.
With five minutes remaining in regulation, Stafford misread the Broncos defense and fired a pass directly to safety Talanoa Hufanga. The Denver defensive back intercepted the ball and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown. The play gave the Broncos a late lead and made Stafford the NFL’s all-time leader in pick-sixes thrown.
Hufanga’s touchdown was Stafford’s 33rd pick-six, passing Brett Favre’s 32 for the most in league history.
Stafford responded from the error in quick order, hooking up with second-year receiver Konata Mumpfield on a 48-yard touchdown to vault Los Angeles back in front with 3:38 to play in the game. Defensive penalties on the Broncos’ ensuing drive — including a very controversial pass interference call — enabled Denver to slide ahead and ultimately claim a 30-26 win.
The Rams (1-2) head to the East Coast for a battle with the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 4 (FOX).
