Ohio State defeated Akron 59-7 on Saturday, but the headlines focused on linebacker K’Vaughan Pope, who was involved in a heated sideline exchange with a Buckeyes assistant before leaving for the locker room after throwing his gloves into the stands at Ohio Stadium. It didn’t stop there as he sent out a pair of tweets during the game, one which was NSFW but later deleted.

On Sunday, head coach Ryan Day made the expected announcement that Pope was no longer a part of the team but would remain on scholarship. Pope would later take to Twitter once more to provide his first public comments since the events of Saturday evening.

“Last night I let my emotions get the best of me. For that I want to apologize to my teammates, coaches and Buckeye Nation,” Pope wrote. “I made a mistake and know that I need to be better and do better. I’m going to take this time to reflect and work on my mental well-being.”

What’s next for Pope is up in the air, but the consequences of his actions will be something he’ll be living with for a long time.
