Former Ole Miss LB DeMarquis Gates is showing an impressive knack for big-time plays. A week after making the game-clinching interception for the Houston Roughnecks against the Tampa Bay Vipers, Gates came up with another huge fourth-quarter pick on Sunday.

In a battle of the XFL’s Texas teams, Houston led the Dallas Renegades 27-20 with two minutes left in the fourth quarter. Dallas was inside the Houston 5-yard line when Renegades QB Philip Nelson threw to Nagel Flynn on an attempted screen. The ball was batted and an alert Gates managed to swoop in for a pick. The Fox Sports 1 broadcasters marveled at the highlight play:

Gates has had an NFL opportunity before but failed to make the regular-season roster. After a strong showing last year in the Alliance of American Football, leading the league in tackles (53) and forced fumbles (5), Gates was signed by the Washington Redskins during the offseason. Unfortunately, his time in Washington did not last long as Gates was cut by Redkins on June 12, 2019. In the rebooted XFL, Gates is producing a highlight reel that should get the attention of NFL teams.

The Roughnecks held on to win 27-20, improving to 4-0.
