Lane Kiffin is very familiar with the thoughts and feelings Clay Helton is experiencing these days as the former Southern Cal coach was let go on Monday.

The Ole Miss coach, however, also knows Helton well from the time Helton was Kiffin’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach when Kiffin coached the Trojans. Kiffin, like Helton, was also fired shortly after a game early in the season.

During three-plus seasons at USC, Kiffin had a record of 28-15. Kiffin’s 2012 USC squad went 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the Pac-12 South, which was second place.

“I feel for Clay,” Kiffin said on Wednesday on the SEC coaches media teleconference. “Clay is a great person. … I can relate to being fired early in the year there. … I feel for him. That’s about all I got on that.”
