Considering how much they paid to land Laremy Tunsil via trade, there was no chance the Texans were going to let the left tackle leave the franchise via free agency next offseason.

Just before the start of the 2019 NFL season, Houston traded two first-round picks and a second-round pick in exchange for Tunsil and receiver Kenny Stills. That’s quite the haul but landing a left tackle to protect Deshaun Watson’s blindside was worth the price for a team that had struggled to do so for years.

Tunsil had a great season in 2019 and now a year before his rookie contract comes up, the Texans have rewarded the left tackle with a new contract. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the Texans have agreed to a three-year deal worth $66 million total and $57.85 million in total guaranteed money. He will also be given a $13 million signing bonus.

This deal makes Tunsil the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL.

Even more impressive than the deal Tunsil landed was the fact that the left tackle negotiated the deal himself, without an agent, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Not bad for a player that entered the league in one of the most unfortunate of circumstances ever seen after a viral photo of Tunsil wearing a bong mask was leaked just before the start of the 2016 NFL Draft.
