Despite having two excellent candidates in-house to choose from in offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez and defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre, Ole Miss is reportedly casting a wide net when it comes to the search for the program’s next head coach.

That net apparently includes one coach that spent last season as an analyst.

According to the Clarion-Ledger’s Brad Logan, former North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora is a name being considered for the Ole Miss job. Fedora spent this season as an analyst in Texas working under Tom Herman.

Fedora was the head coach at North Carolina from 2012 until 2018, when the Tar Heels bottomed out at 2-9 during his final season before firing him. Fedora does have coaching ties to the state of Mississippi as he was formerly the Southern Miss head coach. During his time with the Eagles, Fedora went 34-19 in three seasons.

Ole Miss AD Keith Carter cited fan apathy as one of the reasons for dismissing Matt Luke but it’s hard to imagine the fan base getting very fired up initially about the hire of Fedora until he proves he can win in the SEC.
