Monday’s showdown between No. 11 Ole Miss and No. 4 Florida State is one of the most anticipated games in an action-packed opening weekend.

The Seminoles were a popular preseason Playoff candidate, but the Rebels are a dangerous team in their own right. ESPN analyst Tom Luginbill joined The Paul Finebaum Show on Monday to break down the matchup and share one advantage Ole Miss may have in quarterback Chad Kelly.

“Generally, when you’re going to play with a youngster at quarterback, you want to tip your scales in favor of the team that returns the veteran, and that’s Chad Kelly,” Luginbill said.

Florida State will send out redshirt freshman Deondre Francois in the season opener. Francois was a 4-star recruit coming out of high school and showed potential in the Seminoles’ spring game, throwing for 246 yards with a pair of touchdowns and interceptions.

Still, having potential is different than proving it over the course of a full season – something Kelly did last year. The senior quarterback led Ole Miss to 10 wins last season, while leading the SEC in several passing categories.

“I think (Florida State was) hoping this would happen, not due to injury, but hoping that Deondre Francois will continue to come along and take the reigns so that he can maximize the personnel that’s already outstanding around him,” Luginbill told Finebaum. “That’s happened. Still, scares the heck out of you if you’re Jimbo Fisher going into this matchup and you’ve got a veteran on one sideline pulling the trigger and you don’t know yet what you have.”
