The regular season is only two weeks old, but already the SEC has seen its share of surprises.

Alabama

Tua Tagovailoa is second in the country in passing yards per attempt at 13.0, trailing only Toledo’s Mitchell Guadagni (16.6). It was assumed that Tagovailoa’s arm would help the Crimson Tide stretch the field more and that has been true. But he is still a very young quarterback, so it was not to be assumed that he would be this efficient this early.

Arkansas

Losing to Colorado State. The Razorbacks were expected to struggle against the loaded SEC West after going 1-7 in the conference last season. But the Rams of the Mountain West erased an 18-point deficit and beat the Razorbacks 34-27 on Saturday after entering the game as a 14-point underdog at home. The fans in Fayetteville can’t take that as a good sign.

Auburn

On the heels of a solid win against preseason No. 6 Washington, the Tigers took care of business the way they should have by routing FCS team Alabama State. But the stunner in that game was the fact that Auburn fumbled 5 times and lost 4 of them. Offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey knows his team will have to fix that problem because LSU won’t be as forgiving this Saturday.

Florida

Losing to Kentucky was a surprise, simply because the Wildcats entered Saturday’s game with a 31-game losing streak against the Gators. But what was stunning was how badly Florida was outplayed. Kentucky outgained UF 454-360 and outscored the Gators 20-6 in the second half.

Georgia

Jake Fromm is second in the country in completion percentage at 79.4 percent (27-of-34), which is especially impressive considering the fact that he and his Bulldogs teammates faced an SEC East division rival on Saturday in South Carolina. Fromm completed 62.2 percent last season, which was respectable (and good for second in the SEC) but not as spectacular as his 2018 performance thus far.

Kentucky

The pleasant surprise for Wildcats fans was, of course, beating Florida for the first time since 1986 and winning in Gainesville for the first time since 1979. An even bigger surprise was how comfortable Kentucky looked while doing it. For most of the game the Wildcats did not appear to betray any nerves. So Saturday’s victory, while surprising, did not qualify as a shock.

LSU

Ohio State transfer Joe Burrow’s emergence at quarterback has been a boost for the Tigers. What is surprising is that Buckeyes fans, not always the most forgiving bunch (I’m a native Ohioan, I can say that), seem to all be rooting for LSU this season because of Burrow. Especially in his hometown, where one establishment came up with a creative, Cajun-style sign to support the QB.

Mississippi State

First, quarterback Nick Fitzgerald was suspended for the opener after violating team rules. Then this past Saturday, coach Joe Moorhead benched running back Aeris Williams against Kansas State. “Playing time on Saturday is dictated by your performance during the week and accountability and all those things,” Moorhead said in explaining his decision to sideline Williams for the game.

Missouri

The quarterback derby behind starter Drew Lock took an interesting turn as the season began. Lindsey Scott Jr. and Jack Lowary were pegged as the top candidates to be the backup, but Micah Wilson and redshirt freshman Taylor Powell leaped them both on the depth chart to open the season.

Ole Miss

The defense, which struggled mightily last season, might have been expected to at least show improvement against FCS opponent Southern Illinois on Saturday. Instead, the Salukis racked up 629 yards of offense and 41 points. Those numbers might have been understandable in the opener against Texas Tech but not against a Missouri Valley Conference team.

South Carolina

The six drops that a talented receiving group had against Georgia were a surprise, but not in a good way for Gamecocks fans. Not in a good way for coach Will Muschamp either: “That was all the receivers. Six drops. The ball was delivered where it was supposed to be.”

Tennessee

This might be the miracle of a small sample at work, but through two games the Volunteers have yet to turn the ball over. (LSU and Clemson are the only other programs in the country that can say that after playing two games.) Last season, Tennessee had a turnover margin of minus-3 for the season and averaged 1.5 turnovers committed per game.

Texas A&M

We could mention how close the Aggies came to knocking off No. 2 Clemson, but that was a near-surprise, not an actual surprise. No, for this one we’re going to go young. Really, really young. Honestly, this story is just too funny to pass up.

Vanderbilt

The defense, which struggled last season, has been better. Granted, the opposition has not been at an SEC level — the Commodores have beaten Middle Tennessee State and Nevada — but Vandy deserves credit for being No. 18 nationally in run defense (75 yards allowed per game) and for creating an average of three turnovers per game.
