Joey Gatewood has a new college football home.

247Sports’ Brandon Marcello is reporting that Gatewood is transferring to UCF.  That, of course, reunites him with former Auburn coach Gus Malzahn.

Once Mark Stoops and Kentucky tabbed Will Levis as the starting quarterback, Gatewood entered the NCAA transfer portal. Gatewood was soon linked to UCF because of the connection to Malzahn.

Malzahn signed Gatewood at Auburn, as he was one of the nation’s top dual-threat signal callers in high school. He was rated as the nation’s No. 1 athlete headed to Auburn. Things never clicked for Gatewood with the Tigers, and that’s when he transferred to Kentucky. Now, he’s headed to UCF.

Gatewood threw for just 54 yards in 2 seasons at Auburn with 2 touchdowns. He also rushed for 176 on The Plains with 3 touchdowns. At Kentucky in 2020, Gatewood threw for just 109 yards and rushed for 62 yards.

The Knights could be the perfect program for Gatewood to get his career going and develop into the quarterback he was projected to be out of high school. It’s also a good opportunity for Malzahn to take another shot at developing Gatewood. He was obviously high on the quarterback exiting high school.

Gatewood has 3 years of eligibility left in his college career.
