Kirk Herbstreit has his finger on the pulse of college football, so he has opinions on the state of conference realignment.

On Monday, the popular ESPN analyst appeared on “First Take” and shared his thoughts on where things are going.

As you can see below, Herbie said there’s a solid chance only 3 power conferences survive this current reshuffling:

“The more I listen and more I’m talking to people, I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t settle, ultimately, with three power conferences,” Herbstreit said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen with Notre Dame. But, for argument’s sake, if they eventually give in and go to the Big Ten, that would put the Big Ten at 17. You know the Big Ten is going to get one more or two more, right? So that will change things dramatically.

“Whoever’s left when the dust settles – they don’t go into the B1G, they don’t go into the SEC. I think there’s a good chance we’re gonna end up with 3 power conferences of right around 20 teams. And what I want to know is what’s going to happen to those teams that get left out.”

There are still plenty of dominoes that need to fall in this round of realignment. So, we’ll see what happens over the coming months and years.
