Brandon McIlwain’s college football journey has apparently come to an end.

The former South Carolina quarterback and recent Cal signal-caller has decided he won’t play football for the Bears and will instead focus on his collegiate baseball career, according to Cal head coach Justin Wilcox.

You may recall McIlwain was one of the most highly-regarded quarterback prospects of the 2016 recruiting cycle and was one of the key pieces of Will Muschamp’s first signing class in Columbia. According to 247Sports Composite Rankings, was rated as the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the nation in the 2016 class.

McIlwain played in eight games for the Gamecocks as a true freshman before losing his job to fellow true freshman Jake Bentley during the 2016 season. After losing his job, McIlwain transferred to Cal following his freshman season in Columbia. He played 10 games last season for Cal, throwing for 763 yards, two touchdowns and eight interceptions.

In the latest Major League Baseball draft, McIlwain was drafted in the 26th round by the Miami Marlins.
