When the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles square off in Super Bowl LII on Sunday night, two former South Carolina teammates — Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery and Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore — will be going head-to-head.

Gilmore will likely be tasked with trying to shut down Jeffery, the Eagles’ No. 1 receiver. That, understandably, has caused a temporary rift in their friendship.

Even though Jeffery was a groomsman in Gilmore’s wedding back in 2014, the two longtime friends haven’t spoken this week, according to The State:

“I haven’t talked to him this week. I’m pretty sure he feels the same way,” Jeffery said Wednesday. “It’s nothing on purpose. I mean, I play for the Eagles. Ain’t no friends, none of that. It is what it is.”

Gilmore echoed Jeffery’s sentiments, saying it’s important to stay focused on the job ahead of him and his teammates:

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he said. “You don’t get these (very) often. So you’ve really got to focus on what you’ve got to do to help your team win.”

When all is said and done on Sunday night, one of the ex-Gamecocks will have a championship ring, while the other will be left disappointed.
