Jake Bentley seems happy not to have his dad coaching him this spring.

South Carolina’s starting quarterback was among the players made available to the media Monday, and he shared his thoughts on his new position coach during his interview. His father Bobby switched over from his running back duties to coach the Gamecocks’ QBs for the Outback Bowl but has since shifted back following the hire of Dan Werner from Alabama.

The former Ole Miss offensive coordinator and QB coach has apparently hit it off with Bentley, something the South Carolina QB noted on Monday when asked about his blossoming relationship with his new coach.

“It’s been great. It’s always great to have a different way of saying things. It could be the same teaching point, but the way Coach Werner says it, it hits a different way, and you understand it a little bit better,” Bentley said. “It’s great to have him, he’s very knowledgeable, he has a lot of experience in football so it’s great to just pick his brain and learn everything I can.”

Bentley was asked a follow-up question on how quickly the relationship between a QB and his new position coach can be developed.

“I think the big thing is having a relationship outside of football,” Bentley answered. “The thing for us, we’ve had a few recruiting outings, spending time together whether it’s just sitting down at lunch or dinner — he took us all out to eat. Get to know him off the field better helps. I think it helps us communicate better on the field.”

Of note for all Gamecock fans, Bentley was also asked about his thoughts on Deebo Samuel. According to Bentley, the team’s best receiver looks good so far in his attempt to return to the field coming off a broken foot that cost him nearly all of the 2017 season.

“He looks good. It’s great to have him back out there. He’s an explosive player for us, going to do big things,” Bentley replied. “It’s great to have him back out there and leading our receivers and really doing good.”
