South Carolina faces a huge test at home Saturday afternoon, as No. 1 Georgia makes the trip to Columbia.

Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer was an assistant at South Carolina in 2010 when the Cocks upset top-ranked Alabama 35-21 in Columbia.

He has an idea of what it will take to get the job done against the Bulldogs, but he knows it won’t be easy.

“I was here on that staff,” said Beamer when asked about the 2010 game against the Crimson Tide. “That was certainly a fantastic day and a special environment. … There were some great great great players on the field that day on both sides of the ball. That’ll be the case this weekend. … Any time you have the No. 1 team coming into your stadium, you don’t have to get your players excited for that game. … Still trying to find a weakness on their football team and having a tough time.”

If South Carolina is going to pull off the upset Saturday, it will need a big game from Spencer Rattler.

The transfer quarterback from Oklahoma has passed for 603 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions through 2 games this season. But by any objective measure, he hasn’t been overly sharp.

Beamer, however, expects that to change sooner than later.

“He will continue to get better and better each week,” Beamer said. “… Spencer was much better Week 2. … A lot of that was him, a lot of that was us as a staff trying to help him offensively. … There’s a growth process and learning process that has to take place. … We’re trying to speed up the process as fast as we can. We try to marry a lot of the stuff he did at Oklahoma with what we do here. … It’s just different and that takes time.”
