Shane Beamer and South Carolina have gotten all they can handle from Jacksonville State on Saturday, an afternoon where the program’s 2010-2013 teams will be honored during halftime.

The Gamecocks — the ones from Columbia, that is — are a far cry from those Steve Spurrier-led teams right now. They are tied 14-14 in the 2nd quarter.

Granted, Rich Rodriguez has his Gamecocks playing good football right now. Jacksonville State entered the day at 7-2, 5-1 in Conference USA, in its 1st season as an FBS program. Last year, it went 9-2 (5-0 ASUN) in its final year in the FCS ranks.

But a South Carolina loss would be the latest chapter in a season where it has seen a marked decline from Beamer’s 1st 2 years. It finished 7-6 and won the Duke’s Mayo Bowl over North Carolina in 2021; in 2022, it picked up wins over both Tennessee and Clemson before falling to Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl en route to an 8-5 mark.

Heading into 2023, Beamer’s team, who received votes in the preseason poll, was projected to take the next step forward. They’re now in danger of missing the postseason altogether.

Here’s reaction from social media on South Carolina’s performance:
