Will Muschamp has long been linked to the “hot seat.” After falling to North Carolina to open the 2019 season, there was so much talk of getting rid of the head coach that athletic director Ray Tanner had to answer questions about Muschamp’s status and his contract buyout.

Muschamp’s Gamecocks finished 4-8 in 2019. They opened the 2020 season against a ranked Tennessee team on Saturday. South Carolina was the betting underdog by roughly 3.5 points, but ESPN’s Football Power Index actually gave the Gamecocks a favorable probability of winning outright.

The final score ended up being right on target with the odds. Tennessee escaped South Carolina with a 31-27 victory.
