South Carolina put quite the exclamation point on its Opening Weekend sweep Sunday. Gamecock pitchers combined for the eighth no-hitter in school history. Plenty of offensive support was provided as South Carolina blanked Miami (Ohio) 14-0 in 7 innings for a run-rule victory in the series finale.

Sunday’s no-hitter is the first for the Gamecocks in over a decade (Feb. 24, 2013). It’s a combined no-no from Roman Kimball, Ty Good, Tyler Pitzer, Parker Marlatt and Tyler Dean. They totaled 105 pitches on the day, with 65 strikes.

Kimball was credited as the winning pitcher in the 7-inning contest. He threw the first 2 frames, striking out 5 while walking 3 on 40 pitches (21 strikes).

Good worked efficiently, retiring all 6 batters he faced on 22 pitches (15 strikes) with 2 Ks. Pitzer, Marlatt and Deann each worked one inning to secure the victory. Miami (Ohio) had 25 plate appearances in the game, with 4 reaching via base on balls.

Offensively, Cole Messina led the way with 3 RBIs. He hit a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning to break the scoring ice. In the 4th inning, Messina brought home two more with a 2-out single through the right side.

South Carolina’s output of offensive came without the long ball on Sunday. Gamecock batters were patient at the plate, drawing 16 weeks. Two more reached as hit batsmen.

No. 25 South Carolina will look to make it a 4-0 start on Tuesday against Winthrop.
