The Gamecocks have reportedly added some quality depth to the program’s defensive secondary as Jamel Cook has decided to transfer to South Carolina.

Cook, a former three-star prospect and U.S. Army All-American in the 2016 recruiting cycle from Miami, signed with Southern Cal coming out of high school. He chose to sign with the Trojans over scholarship offers from Alabama, Florida, LSU, Clemson, Florida State and Miami among others. In his two seasons in Los Angeles, Cook redshirted one season and played sparingly as a redshirt freshman in 2017.

News of Cook’s transfer to South Carolina was first reported by Chris Clark of Gamecock Central.

Per NCAA transfer rules, Cook will miss the upcoming season as he will have to sit out after transferring but he should factor into the Gamecocks’ defensive backfield immediately in 2019. With Keisean Nixon and Steven Montac set to embark on their senior seasons in Columbia, adding Cook to the roster could prove to be a much-needed addition come this time next year.
