On Wednesday, Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher announced he was going with Haynes King as his starting quarterback for Week 1 against Kent State.

King beat out Zach Calzada for the starting job in what Fisher said was a tight competition.

Also on Wednesday, King’s father, John King, weighed in on the big news. He said he got emotional watching his son as a backup last year, adding that he might be even more overwhelmed watching his son run out of the tunnel at Kyle Field as a starter (via The Eagle):

“I went down last year when they opened up with Vanderbilt, and I cried when they ran out of the tunnel, and I knew he wouldn’t even get in the game,” John King said. “But to see my son run out of the tunnel in an SEC football game, to know my son is playing SEC football at one of the finest universities in the country, it got to me. I don’t know — 100,000 Aggie fans and a 7 o’clock kickoff — I might not be able to handle it. We’ll see. It’ll be emotional.”

Fans will be eager to see Haynes in action this year, too. There are a lot of expectations for a great season in College Station.
