Jimbo Fisher has no intention of handing a starting role on his first Texas A&M team to anyone. That being said, the Aggie coach is giving every player on his inherited roster an opportunity to show him what they can do.

Of course, the position that’s being scrutinized the most this offseason in College Station is at quarterback, where Kellen Mond and Nick Starkel are currently battling it out for the right to take the first snap of the season in the season opener against Northwestern State. After Mond was spotted getting first-team reps during the most recent Texas A&M practice, Fisher was asked if that is indeed what was going on — is Mond taking first-team reps?

“Oh, he is, we rotate. Nick is with me one day, then Kellen the next. Every day we’ve done that,” Fisher said following Monday’s practice. “So we’ve flipped them each day. We’ll look at everybody, give everybody a fair chance, an equal chance — being with each group. I want to see how they react by leading a different group of people. Kellen has learned that right. There’s no starters — everybody is first-team.”

Both quarterbacks struggled at times last season, which was the first for both quarterbacks to see the field for the Aggies. Starkel earned the first start of the season against UCLA but was injured and missed the next six games. True freshman Mond came in with a huge reputation and flashed greatness at times but played as inconsistently as one would expect from a true freshman QB in the SEC.

Fisher went on to say Mond had a great performance in Monday’s practice but it doesn’t appear too much should be read into that, as he noted Starkel’s spring performance, too.

“So it’s their job to keep fighting and (Kellen)’s done a good job — he had a pretty good day today,” Fisher said. “Made some nice plays in the red zone, made some nice third down throws. Done a nice job, but Nick is too.”

It’s clear Fisher isn’t ready to tip his hand either way at this point. Don’t be surprised if this battle goes deep into fall camp as we approach the start of Fisher’s first campaign in College Station.
