Kellen Mond may be leading the White team in Texas A&M’s upcoming 2019 Maroon & White Game but it sounds like he’s taken charge and stepped up his leadership this spring by assuming the responsibilities that come with being a starting quarterback for Jimbo Fisher.

During his recent media availability, the junior quarterback was asked to share his thoughts on his second spring practice since Fisher’s arrival in College Station now that he’s comfortable in the system and entrenched as the team’s starter under center.

“Me being the starter, I’ve become a lot better leader, being more vocal,” Mond shared. “Coming into last spring, there was no starter, we didn’t really know the offense so being able to learn from my mistakes and help others learn from their mistakes and try to get everybody up to par is kind of been a really big thing for me.”

With Nick Starkel planning to leave Texas A&M for Arkansas as a graduate transfer this offseason, the lack of experience behind Mond in College Station is notable. In addition to being the leader of the offense, Mond has made an effort to get the Aggies’ young quarterbacks, redshirt freshman James Foster and true freshman Zach Calzada, up to speed this spring in College Station.

“That’s kinda been one of the biggest things for me, just not only helping other people but helping those quarterbacks,” Mond continued. “Zach and James, who are both kind of new to this offense, trying to get them up to speed and making sure that I’m trying to get them on the same level as me.”
