There’s often a mutual respect between professional athletes at the top of their game, and that respect can span a wide variety of sports.

Former Texas A&M receiver Mike Evans has become one of the NFL’s brightest young stars during his three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s no surprise then, that he connected with one of boxing’s fastest-rising fighters during the last day of OTAs.

Undefeated boxer Erickson Lubin, who is 18-0 in his career with 13 knockouts and the top contender for the WBC title, was allowed to attend the Buccaneers’ final day of Organized Team Activities, according to pewterreport.com. While at practice, Lubin connected with Evans.

“I’m a big Bucs fan. Jameis [Winston] is young just like I am, so I support the young guys who also try to influence the youth,” Lubin said, according to Pewter Report. “This is my first time getting to meet them. I heard that Mike Evans is a big boxing fan; we got to speak a little bit. He told me he’s a big fan of me, as I am of him.”

While Lubin is making a name for himself in the ring, Evans is tearing it up on the football field. In his short career, Evans has caught 238 passes for 3,578 yards and 27 touchdowns; he was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2016.

“I got to talk to him when I was out here,” Evans told Pewter Report. “I told him I was a big fan of his; he said he was a fan of me. We wish him nothing but the best moving forward. He’s a young, up-and-coming fighter. He’s very explosive and fun to watch.

“Hands and quicknesses,” Evans said of the traits that connect both receivers and boxers. “I do boxing workouts, and that shows when I’m working my hands off the line, and it just helps with good hand-eye-coordination.”
