Just when the silly season that is the coaching carousel seemed to be winding down, you get a story like this one.

Texas A&M announced Jerry Montgomery as Jimbo Fisher’s associate head coach and defensive line coach on Jan. 8. Montgomery was hired away from the Green Bay staff after he had served three seasons as an assistant defensive line coach for the Packers.

“We are excited to be able to add a quality coach like Jerry to our staff at Texas A&M,” Fisher said in an official statement released by the school just over two weeks ago. “He’s a high-energy guy and his leadership skills will be of great benefit to our team. He’s a tremendous recruiter, and he’s been a successful defensive coach at the pro and collegiate levels.”

A solid hire for Fisher and A&M to be sure as Montgomery had NFL experience along with stints at Michigan and Oklahoma. In fact, he was named Big 12 Recruiter of the Year after the 2014 season by Scout.

The only problem, Green Bay officially announced head coach Mike McCarthy’s 2018 staff for the Packers and Montgomery is listed as the defensive line coach. His Packers bio does not mention Texas A&M, only listing his previous experience with the club and at Michigan, Oklahoma, Wyoming and Northern Iowa.

And just like that, the Aggies are back on the market for a defensive line coach as we are now only two weeks away from National Signing Day.
